An officer in the Canadian Armed Forces was attending a conference that included
Admirals from the British, French, and U.S. forces. During the cocktail reception that
evening, the French Admiral started complaining (and forgetting about Quebec) whereas
Europeans learned many languages, we have learned only English.
He then asked: "Why is it that we have to speak English in these conferences
rather than you speak French? Without hesitating, the Canadian Major General
replied: "Maybe it's because the Brits, Aussies, Americans and Canadians
arranged it so you would not have to speak German."
